Reliance Jio’s ambitious project of converting India into 4G accessible nation is slowly starting to see the light of day with the introduction of the JioPhone. The low-cost ‘smart’ feature phone brings 4G connectivity along with access to social media platforms such as Facebook and Google Assistant. However, since the feature phone runs on KaiOS, WhatsApp instant messaging app was not designed to run on the platform.
When will WhatsApp launch an app for JioPhone users? Since last year, when Reliance Jio launched its 4G-enabled feature phone, the JioPhone, this has been one of the major queries from interested buyers looking to buy Reliance Jio’s smart feature phone. However, while WhatsApp has remained silent over this since last year, WhatsApp for JioPhone might become a reality, sooner than later.
For the unknown, JioPhone is powered by the KaiOS, an operating system with which the company has been successfully able to morph the 4G connectivity into a feature phone which also connects users with select apps as well as responds to voice commands. While the JioPhone already comes with the support of Facebook and Google Assistant, users have been complaining about the lack of WhatsApp support which has become one of the essential apps for the 4G-generation of today. However, all of that is going to change soon.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is already in works with Reliance Jio to launch a lighter version of its app for the JioPhone which will be supported by the KaiOS. This development doesn’t come as a surprise as KaiOS already has Facebook as a supported app developer and since WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, it would be finding value in bringing the instant messaging platform to this new as well as ever so growing ecosystem.
The report by WABetaInfo adds that some important references in regards with the development of a native app for KaiOS had been spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta version for Windows Phone 2.18.38 and this indicates the presence of a new platform which can be connected to WhatsApp servers, as well. “Important references about the development of a new native KaiOS app had been found in the latest WhatsApp beta for Windows Phone 2.18.38, indicating the presence of a new platform that can be connected to WhatsApp servers,” read a post by WABetaInfo.
