Shikhar Dhawan had a torrid start to the practice match against Essex as the left-handed batsman was dismissed on the first delivery he faced, edging one from Matt Coles to the wicket-keeper James Foster. The 32-year-old player has been expected to be given a nod over KL Rahul to open the innings along with Murali Vijay but he squandered the opportunity with a duck in his first outing with the red ball.
With a golden duck in the first innings, he has pushed himself behind KL Rahul, who played an innings of 58 before being dismissed. He took his time and played 92 balls for his 58.
Considering that Dhawan was dropped after one poor outing against South Africa earlier this year, Rahul is expected to open the innings in the first Test and it will be his form in that game which will decide whether Dhawan will be back in the playing XI or not.
After being dismissed on a duck on day 1 of the practice match, Dhawan hit nets in the evening and shared a video on Twitter where he could be seen doing some batting practice after not having a great day during the match. However, he got trolled for sharing the video as Twitterati questioned his poor run with the bat .
At stumps, India were at a score of 322/6 after 84 overs bowled in the day. Dinesh Karthik warmed up well with an innings of 82* off 94. Hardik Pandya is standing alongside the wicketkeeper-batsman at a score of 33* off 58.
Indian captain Virat Kohli continued his form on the tour and played an innings of 68 off 93 whereas Murali Vijay too played a handy knock of 52 off 113.
Cheteshwar Pujara, who had a dry run in county cricket, could manage just one run during his seven-ball stay at the crease while Ajinkya Rahane could only register a score of 17.
