There was a reason why MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings was rooting for Rajasthan Royals. Ambati Rayudu’s brilliance with the willow once again stood out against table-toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad as Chennai Super Kings defeated the tourists at MCA Stadium in Pune on Saturday (May 13) by eight wickets. The win took their points tally to 16 in 12 matches, but it did not assure their confirmation for the IPL 2018 playoffs. With a royal victory for the Royals against Mumbai Indians, CSK became the second team to qualify for the knockout stage.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s win over beleaguered Delhi Daredevils had already assured their spot in the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Abd now Chennai join them, extending their record to nine. CSK are the only team to qualify for the playoffs in all IPL seasons that they have participated.
And who could they credit their victory to? Rajasthan Royals. Or probably Jos Buttler, to be more precise. The Englishman notched up his sixth IPL fifty, five in a row.
Rajasthan Royals headed into Wankhede Stadium as underdogs against defending champions Mumbai Indians, but Jos Buttler once again rescued his side against his former with a stunning unbeaten knock of 94 runs as the visitors stay alive in the race to IPL 2018 playoffs. While for Mumbai, they now stand at the brink of elimination with ifs and buts to support their cause for survival in the race.
The points table as now reflects high possibility for Kings XI Punjab to be the third team to make it to the playoffs, while KKR and Rajasthan will have a fight for the fourth spot. Bleak possibility, although, remain with RCB and Mumbai.
