HIGHLIGHTS | IPL 2018, MI vs KXIP: As it happened…

That is it from our LIVE coverage of the IPL 2018 encounter between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab from the Wankhede stadium. Mumbai put up a total of 186 runs, but KXIP was on course in reply to it with KL Rahul notching up 94 runs and Finch chipping in with his score of 42. However, Jasprit Bumrah’s double whammy in the 19th over brought two out-of-form batsmen to the crease. In the end, it was Mumbai who stole the win by a narrow three-run win.

23:53 IST: Bumrah in for his final over as KXIP need 23 to win. Third ball and Rahul has been dismissed. Shocker for KXIP fans at Wankhede!! Yuvraj came in next. Can he truly make the difference? Six off the over. Score 170/4

23:38 IST: Death overs are here and Bumrah in for the first. First ball and Finch departed. Big wicket for Mumbai Indians. Excellent catch by Hardik in the deep. Marcus Stoinis walked in next. 23:16 IST: McClenaghan in for his third over. First ball, short and angled it down onto the body as Rahul pulled it over short fine leg for a four. Fifth ball, shorter again and Finch flat-batted to smash it down the ground for a boundary. 12 off the over. Krunal came in for his final over. Third ball, Finch lofted the fullish delivery over the bowler’s head for a boundary. 10 off the over. Score 121/1 after 14 overs.

23:08 IST: Krunal Pandya in for his second over. Fourth ball, straight and quicker through the air and Finch timed his sweep right to get the ball rolling down to the fine leg boundary. Single in the last ball and Rahul brought up yet another IPL fifty. Bumrah in for his second over. Mumbai desperate for a wicket. Just four singles off the over. Score 99/1 after 12 overs.

22:58 IST: Markande in for his second over. Dealing with singles, Rahul and Finch managed seven off the over. The run rate has fallen below 9 now, but Rahul is looking strong with his score of 43 runs. Hardik returns for his third over. 50-run partnership came up for Finch and Rahul. Score 86/1 after 10 overs.

22:55 IST: Markande came into the attack after the strategic time-out. Leg-break in the first ball and Rahul lazily cut it past backward point for a boundary. Nine came off that over. Krunal too got hit for a four in his first ball past backward point by Rahul. Seven off the over. Score after 8 overs stands as 73/1

22:46 IST: Krunal Pandya in for the final over of the powerplay. And Rahul welcomed him with a four down to long-on fence off a length delivery around the off. Fifth ball, fuller delivery and stunning sweep past the fine-leg fielder by Rahul. Score 57/1 after six overs. Run rate stands at 9.5, so that’s good for KXIP, despite losing Gayle early.

22:42 IST: Hardik back in, looking for some redemption after that thrashing 28 runs in his first over. And just when it was heading into a good over, Finch hit the last ball for a monstrous six. Length ball outside off and Finch smashed it high over long-on for a maximum. 12 off the over, Score 46/1

22:36 IST: McClenaghan in for his second over. First ball, fuller outside off and Gayle off his front foot lofted it over mid-on for a boundary. Fifth ball, shorter delivery outside off and Gayle, looking for a pull rocketed the ball high into the air before it fell safely into the hand of Ben Cutting at deep mid-wicket. Aaron Finch walked in next. Score 34/1 at the end of 4 overs.

22:26 IST: Chris Gayle and KL Rahul are out with the bat and will be up against Mitchell McClenaghan in the first over. Third ball, shorter delivery onto the leg side and Rahul shimmied across to pull it high over mid-wicket for a six. Eight came of that over. Jasprit Bumrah shared the new ball for the second over. Excellent over from the pacer as he conceded just a single. At the end of the 2nd over, Score stands 9/0.

22: 04 IST: A bouncer to begin in the 20th over and Mayank Markande hit the ball for a four at the third man boundary. Markande takes a single on the second to bring McClenaghan in lead. The bowler goes around the wicket and ends up delivering a wide. Similar one on the very next delivery but just inside the line this time ends up being a dot. Mohit seemed to have gotten the better of McClenaghan on the third delivery but that was signalled for an above-shoulder no-ball. Markande, facing the free-hit delivery, could only get a single on it. A single each from the 5thand 6th delivery ended Mumbai’s total at 186 runs.

21: 55 IST: WICKET! Tye gets his fourth! What a brilliant bowler he has been for Kings XI Punjab. Hardik Pandya fails to contribute to Mumbai’s cause yet again and ends up giving away his wicket for cheap in the slog overs. Markande is the new man in as MI chase the elusive 190-run mark. That’s the end of the 19th over, score 175/8.

21: 47 IST: WICKET! R Ashwin gets another important wicket. Ben Cutting gives an easy catch at the long-on boundary as Mumbai lose their 7th wicket of the match. The past few overs haven’t been the way MI would have liked, but all credit to KXIP who have pulled themselves back in the game with some spectacular bowling. A six on the final bowl spoils the attempt as the hosts get their much-needed boundary. Score 167/7 after 18 overs.

21: 45 IST: Andrew Tye has been brought back into the attack by KXIP skipper R Ashwin. Another tidy one from the Australian as the visitors concede just three runs from the 17th over. Three overs more to go, but will Mumbai be able to reach 190? Score 157/6 after 17 overs.

21: 42 IST: WICKET! Pollard couldn’t last long after completing his fifty Ashwin gets the breakthrough for Punjab as Mumbai lose their 6th wicket. Ben Cutting is the new man for Mumbai. Just three runs from Ashwin’s over as the KXIP skipper brings some sort of hold on MI’s free-scoring attack. Score 154/6 after 16 overs.

21: 34 IST: WICKET! Marcus Stoinis gets the breakthrough as Krunal Pandya departs. Hardik Pandya is the new man in for Mumbai. Pollard, on the other hand, gets to lucky boundaries on the 4th and 5th deliveries of the over to give Mumbai some valuable runs. Mumbai still in a good position in the match. 150-mark overhauled as Pollard gets his fifty. Score 151/5 after 15 overs.

21: 27 IST: Mumbai are dealing in boundaries, with Pollard taking the role of the aggressor. Ankit Rajpoot going for plenty of runs just like other pacers. Rajpoot trying different variations but the Mumbai are reading his attempts with immaculate ease. 14 runs from the over as Mumbai suddenly see a spike in their scoring rate. Score 134/4 after 14 overs.

21: 20 IST: Krunal seems to be the man who will play a more attacking game while Pollard will keep rotating strike for now. Hitting spinners, although, seem to be a more difficult job for the batsman, but Pollard shos he can hit too as he clears the long-on boundary with ease on the final ball of the over by Axar. Score 116/4 after 13 overs.

21: 16 IST: Krunal Pandy could have been walking back to pavilion this over had he mistimed the flick six just a bit but he cleared the fine leg boundary before hitting Stoinis for another maximum towards deep long on. Mumbai clearly targeting the pace bowlers as Krunal bags 17 runs from the first four deliveries. A single each on the 5th and 6th deliveries concludes a good over for Mumbai. 19 from it. Score 104/4 after 12 overs.

21: 10 IST: Krunal, Pollard continue their progression at a decent run-rate. This partnership will play a crucial role in terms of how far can the defending champions go in the match. Axar Patel with another economical over for the Kings XI Punjab. Score 85/4 after the end of 11 overs.

21:00 IST: Match has been delayed due to floodlight failure.

20: 51 IST: A tidy and effective over from Ankit Rajpoot and great thinking by the Punjab captain Ashwin to bring the pacer back in the attack at this stage where Mumbai look to be in a little pressure. Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard have a big task in front of them now. Score 72/4 after 9 overs.

20: 46 IST: Rajpoot brought back into the attack and Rohit Sharma becomes his first victim. Yuvraj Singh makes no mistake while catching the ball. Mumbai Indians lose their fourth wicket as strategic timeout has been called into the action for the hosts to reassess their strategy for the match. Score 71/4 after 8.2 overs.

20: 43 IST: Skipper R Ashwin has brought himself into the attack as Punjab look to attack with spin from both ends of the pitch. The Tamil Nadu offie is constantly swapping ends around the wicket for the two batsmen. 5 runs from the over! Score 71/3 after 8 overs.
