Mestha case: 106 cases booked for inciting violence using social media

Karwar: The district police have booked 106 cases in total at various police stations in the district against those responsible for inciting violence using social media networking websites like Facebook, WhatsApp and other similar online portals following the death of Paresh Mestha in Honnavar recently.

Cases have been booked against the miscreants under sections 153, 153 (a), 505, 295 (a), 504, 506 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Information Technology (IT) Act of 2008 against all such offenders and all have been remanded to judicial custody following the death of Paresh Mestha in Honnavar recently.

The district Internet and Social Media Monitoring Cell has been closely monitoring the activities of anti-social elements active in social media websites, with built in nefarious designs to disturb peace and incite communal violence. The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Uttara Kannada has warned such elements of stringent action and has asked the public to stay away from such social networking groups and not fall prey to wild rumours aimed at fuelling communal tension.
