‘Naniruvude nimagaagi, nadirivudu namagaagi …”, the hit song from Rajkumar-starrer Mayura that has survived from the 1970s, is now the favourite of the Janata Dal (Secular). The party has been using the tune in most public rallies of the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. The tune, in true filmi style, is used to mark his arrival at the rallies.
The party has now used tunes of over 300 popular Kannada songs — from the 1960s to the latest — and used lyrics to highlight the party work, especially among the women folk and the young crowd.
“We have released about 200 songs till now and WhatsApp has been an excellent medium to reach the voters directly. While the tunes catch the attention, the lyrics send out the party’s message,” said K. Sadananda, media secretary to Mr. Kumaraswamy.
According to him, the party has been trying to reach women in rural areas with these songs. “Women, especially in rural areas, who are busy in household work can watch or hear these songs sent on WhatsApp. We are sending these songs to the cadre in different constituencies and asking them to forward them to voters,” he said.
The lyrics for the tune and production have been done in-house, and a few people have been hired to produce them. The party intends to highlight its work and the contribution of party supremo H.D. Deve Gowda as Chief Minister of the State and as Prime Minister, and of H.D. Kumaraswamy as Chief Minister.
