Bantwal: State Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology, Bellipady Ramanath Rai has filed his nomination from the Bantwal Constituency for the upcoming assembly elections to be held on May 12.
Taking a procession from the B C Road bus stand to the mini Vidhana Saudha, along with several Congress party workers, Ramanath Rai submitted his nomination before the election returning officer here on April 19.
Addressing the gathering, before filing nomination, he said this was for the eighth time that he was contesting from the Bantwal Assembly Constituency and hence the people should bless him in the elections.
“I will be indebted to the people of the Bantwal Assembly Constituency and to the Congress party. Veteran Congress leaders like B Janardhana Poojary, Oscar Fernandes and Veerappa Moily provided me with the opportunity to contest for the elections and to be a political leader. They are the reason behind my political growth. In my political career as MLA and a minister, I have worked treating all castes and religions equally”, Rai said.
He also requested the people of his constituency to elect him in the assembly elections.
Rai also informed that AICC President Rahul Gandhi would visit Bantwal on April 27, for the purpose of election campaigning. The party workers should join this campaign in large numbers, he requested.
Ramanath Rai has been elected consecutively from the Bantwal since 1985 but, in 2004, BJP’s Nagaraj Shetty defeated Rai. Later in 2008, Nagaraj Shetty lost the elections to Rai. Even in 2013, Ramanath Rai defeated BJP’s Rajesh Naik in the Bantwal Assembly Constituency.
Ramanath Rai has been elected as an MLA in the years 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2008 and 2013. In the year 1992, Rai was the State Home Minister, in 1994 he was Excise Minister, in 1999 he became Minister for Fisheries, in 2002 he became Minister for Transport and in 2013 he became Minister for Forest Environment and Ecology.
